2022

Sometimes big impressions come from the smallest transformations. I was commissioned by Jill and Jesse, the homeowners, to paint something (anything I wanted) on this little architectural structure that stuck out into their alley. In light of constant vandalization, they wanted an intentional design to deter further graffiti.

We decided to create a little homage to their furry friends (past and present).  I came up with the “Chow Bella Howl-tel”. A four paw hotel complete with a bone shaped pool on the roof. Even though it is so tiny, this is definitely one of my favorite projects to date.

“My husband and I first met Katy at the Maker’s Arcade in San Diego. We fell in love with her art immediately and by the end of the day had bought one of her beautiful handmade blankets. I started following Katy on Instagram and learned very quickly that she created murals all over the city. We live in one of the urban neighborhoods in San Diego and have often had issues with graffiti tags on our property.

I thought that having a mural might deter graffiti artists from tagging our home. I also liked the idea of having a custom mural tell a story about us and our home. We requested the mural be an homage to all our pets, past and present. Katy took it from there and created the most fun and colorful pet hotel on the side of our house.

Our little mural has become somewhat Insta famous because we often have visitors stop by to view it in person and snap a photo or two. We love hearing all the positive feedback from passers by and every now and then we will stop and tell folks about our mural and what it represents for us. Art is meant to be shared and I love that Katy’s work is fun, lighthearted and full of color. Katy is one of a kind and our experience with her has been joyful and unique.”
